Joseph Anthony Ryan Jr.: His Death Is Featured on Netflix’s Sins Of Our Mothers

Joseph Anthony Ryan Jr

Joseph Anthony Ryan Jr. was the ex-husband of Lori Ryan Daybell, also known as Lori Vallow Daybell. Lori was charged with the murder of her two children, J.J. and Tylee, hiding their bodies and reporting them missing in September 2019. The trial against Lori and her fifth husband Chad Daybell, whose compound the children’s bodies were found buried, was delayed over concerns about Lori’s competency. Netflix runs a docuseries, “Sins Of Our Mother,” about the reality of the crime. Below is a sneak peek into the details of Joseph and his children’s deaths.

Joseph Anthony Ryan Jr. Bio

Joseph Anthony Ryan Jr. lived a typical quiet life. He married Lori in 2001 and adopted her son, Colby Ryan, from her previous marriage to William Lagioia. The couple welcomed their daughter Tylee Ryan in 2002. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out for Ryan and Lori for long, which resulted in Ryan filing for a divorce on 31 August 2004. The divorce was finalized on 18 May 2005.

In 2007, Lori’s brother, Alexander Lamar “Alex” Cox, attacked Ryan with a taser and threatened to kill him. Cox claimed that Ryan had been abusive to Lori and the children. In a statement, Tylee and Colby agreed with their mother that Ryan sexually harassed them. However, a psychiatrist noted that the children were being forced by their mother to make the accusations.

As a result of the attack and following his confession, Cox was sentenced to 90 days in jail and five years of probation. Cox died on 12 December 2019 of apparent natural causes; blood clots and high blood pressure.

Ryan died in his apartment on 3 April 2018 of an apparent heart attack. His body was found days after his death after his neighbor notified maintenance of an off-smell reeking out of Ryan’s apartment. After the police notified Lori of his death, she did not inform Ryan’s family.

Joseph Anthony Ryan Jr. Children

Ryan’s biological child was Tylee Ashlyn Ryan, born on 24 September 2002. Her parents divorced when she was about two years old and were in a long battle over her custody. Tylee’s mother, Lori, married twice after divorcing her father, who was her third husband. In 2013, Lori and her fourth husband, Leland Charles Anthony Vallow, adopted his grandnephew Joshua Jaxon “J.J.” Vallow. The family moved to Kauai, Hawaii, in late 2014. Charles was shot dead by Lori’s brother, Alex Cox, on 11 July 2019, citing self-defense.

Tylee’s mother then married Chad Daybell in October 2019. Tylee was last seen at Yellowstone National Park on 8 September 2019, accompanied by her mother, Chad, and J.J. Her stepbrother, J.J., was last seen alive on 23 September 2019 at Rexburg’s Kennedy Elementary School. The two children were initially reported missing by their concerned relatives after not hearing from them for weeks.

On 9 June 2020, Tylee and J.J.’s bodies were discovered buried in Chad’s property in Salem, Idaho. Following the discovery, Chad Daybell was arrested and charged with Destruction, Alteration, or Concealment of Evidence. Lori was charged with conspiracy to murder the death of her husband, Charles Vallow, and three misdemeanor charges.

On 25 May 2021, Lori and Chad Daybell were charged with the murders of Tylee Ryan, JJ Valow, and Tamara Daybell. However, Lori was deemed incompetent and unfit to stand trial as the jury waited for a status update from a mental health facility.

Lori’s trial was suspended on 29 September 2022 due to competency concerns. The new trial date is still unknown.
