Safety Tips for Riding a Helicopter

Safety-Tips-for-Riding-a-Helicopter

So you’ve already booked those heli scenic flights that are guaranteed to impress your date, but are you actually prepared for the experience? Going on a helicopter tour is definitely one of those glamorous date ideas that people with the budget for it should try at least once, but it’s also an activity that comes with some potential safety issues. That’s why it’s so important to book with an experienced operator who specialises in scenic flight tours. It’s also important to know the following safety tips before going on your flight:

Before Boarding

Make some time to go to a pre-flight briefing and pay close attention to the pilots as they talk to you about emergency procedures, seat belt usage, and how to safely enter and exit the helicopter. It’s important to remember that you should always approach and depart from the front of the helicopter where the pilot has a clear line of sight and can see you the whole time. Do not, under any circumstances, try to approach from the tail rotor, as that can be extremely dangerous. You should also remember to walk in a crouched position in order to avoid the main rotor blades. If you have any loose clothing or belongings that could be blown away by the rotor wash, make sure to secure them first before getting onboard the helicopter.

During the Flight

Always wear your seat belt and follow any instructions the pilot gives you. Avoid distractions and do not touch any controls or interfere in any way while the pilot is flying the helicopter. Let the pilot do their job while you keep your hands and arms inside the aircraft and enjoy the experience with your date. If you were given headsets, put them on since they can protect your hearing from the helicopter’s loud noises and allow you to communicate with the others inside the vessel at the same time. If at any time during the ride you experience any discomfort or concerns, talk to the pilot immediately so they can assist you.

Exiting the Helicopter

Wait for the pilot to give you the go signal before leaving the helicopter and exiting in a crouched position. If the pilot gave you instructions regarding the safest exit route, then be sure to follow them to the letter so you can avoid any accidents. Since the rotor wash can be very strong, be mindful of any loose debris or objects that may be flying around and keep your eyes and head protected.
